Rapid reaction: Huge days from Nailor, Walker lead Michigan State to road win over Rutgers
It was a record-setting day for Michigan State’s offense in Piscataway.
The historic outing started in the 1st half for the Spartans and continued through the final 30 minutes. Receiver Jalen Nailor ended the first 2 quarters with an impressive 208 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 4 catches, setting a new receiving record at Rutgers’ SHI Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Previously, the record was held by Pitt’s Larry Fitzgerald, who had 207 receiving yards against the Scarlet Knights in 2003. Thanks to Nailor’s 3 touchdowns — all over 60 yards — Michigan State took a 21-13 advantage into the locker room.
Records were broken in the 2nd half for Michigan State, as well. Midway through the 3rd quarter, running back Kenneth Walker ripped off a 94-yard touchdown run to give the Spartans a 28-13 lead. It was the longest scoring run in school history.
That touchdown was enough to seal the win for Michigan State, which improved to 6-0 on the season and will likely challenge for a spot in the Top 10 when the USA TODAY and Associated Press polls are released on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans were also the first team in the Power 5 to secure bowl eligibility.
Even though the game was in hand, one more record fell in Piscataway.
Kicker Matt Coghlin converted on a 35-yard field goal attempt to make the final score 31-13. That make was the 72nd of his career with the Spartans, another program-best.
Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne ended the game with 339 yards and 3 touchdowns while completing 16-of-27 passes. He had just 1 interception in the contest.
Walker eclipsed the 200-yard mark for the second time this season, piling up 234 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. Nailor ended the afternoon with 221 yards on 5 receptions and was on the receiving end of all of Thorne’s touchdown passes.
Rutgers fought hard early, taking an early 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter thanks to a 9-play, 72-yard drive that included a 3rd-and-18 conversion and a 30-yard run from Noah Vedral. The Scarlet Knights had a second lead at 10-7 following a 72-yard, 10-play drive early in the 2nd quarter.
Eventually, Rutgers ran out of firepower.
The Scarlet Knights were shutout in the final 30 minutes and they were held to only 93 yards on the ground. With the loss, Rutgers falls to 3-3. It will head to Evanston to play Northwestern next week.
With one of the most explosive offenses in the B1G right now, Michigan State will head to Bloomington to put its undefeated record on the line against a 2-3 Indiana squad coming off a bye week.
