Rapid Reaction: New-look offense looks eerily similar as Michigan State's defense dominates Tulsa
Final Score: Michigan State 28, Tulsa 7
Brief Recap: Spartans fans probably aren’t too thrilled about the opener. Michigan State never trailed, and they were never really threatened, but the offense once again left a little bit to be desired. After a full offseason of preparation, there wasn’t too much to like about the performance. Defensively, the Spartans appear to be the real deal, but their biggest tests are yet to come.
Key Moment: Michigan State scored on its opening possession of the game and never trailed. But in the midst of a string of sluggish offensive trips, defensive end Kenny Willekes provided an impressive play with a sack, strip, and fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown. That play made it 22-0 Spartans, effectively putting to bed any concerns of a Week 1 upset.

Key Stat: Rushing yardage, both offensively and defensively for MSU. The Spartans only gained 108 yards on the ground with 2.7 yards per carry. That’s simply not going to cut it against B1G competition. However, the defense was even more impressive, holding Tulsa to -73 rushing yards. Yes, you read that right: NEGATIVE 73.
Key Player: The biggest standout from the win has to be Willekes. He lived in the backfield and proved to be the motor that drives this defense. Willekes causes so much havoc in both the running and passing game, and he truly makes life easier for everyone around him. Honorable mention goes to QB Brian Lewerke. He protected the ball in the passing game and proved to be effective on the ground with 34 rushing yards.
What it Means: The good news is Michigan State’s defense once again looks like it will be among the best in the country. The bad news is the offense looks like it will leave many fans wanting more once again. Michigan State will move on to Western Michigan next Saturday in a game that should serve as another easy tune-up before the Power 5 schedule begins. Either way, the offensive line will need to get healthier and play better if this team is to achieve its ultimate ceiling this season.
