Mark Dantonio hasn’t come out and said it yet, but jobs could be on the line in East Lansing this year.

During the offseason, Dantonio decided to reshuffle his coaching staff rather than going through the firing and hiring process. After one of the worst offensive seasons in his career at Michigan State, he knew he couldn’t stand idly by.

So, he decided to reorganize the offensive staff. Position coaches swapped roles and there were changes among coordinators, all in hopes of having a more productive offense — and season — in 2019. And, just in case those changes aren’t enough, there’s a little contract incentive for a handful of individuals on staff.

According to a report from the Lansing State Journal, five assistants on staff have signed restructured contracts, which reduced the length from two-year rollover deals to one-year rollover deals.

The five coaches who signed the reconfigured deal are:

  • Brad Salem, offensive coordinator
  • Dave Warner, quarterbacks coach
  • Jim Bollman, offensive line coach
  • Mark Staten, tight ends coach
  • Terrence Samuel, defensive backs assistant

Per the report, the changes to the contract, the assistants must be notified between the end of the season and March 15 if the university plans to terminate their contact. If there is no notification, the coaches will be extended for another year.

Michigan State will also not have an financial obligations to those coaches beyond the current contract year, should they be terminated.

The Spartans finished last season with a 7-6 record and an appearance in the Redbox Bowl.
