One of the few positives for Michigan State the past few months was its early start on its 2018 recruiting class.

The Spartans already had commitments from a trio of four-star Ohio recruits before the start of spring ball.

Well, make that two four star Ohio recruits.

A month after giving his verbal pledge to MSU, four-star Dayton (Ohio) wideout Joseph Scates announced he was opening up his commitment.

That announcement came after Scates visited Alabama for its junior day and received an offer from the Crimson Tide over the weekend.

Scates is rated the No. 23 receiver and the No. 129 player overall in the 2018 class (247sports composite). He has offers from the likes of Indiana, Minnesota, Pitt and others, but Alabama was his first big-time offer.

Without Scates, MSU still has commitments from two of the top 10 recruits in the state of Ohio.

The Spartans also picked up a pledge from the top quarterback in Michigan, Theo Day, on Sunday.
