Former Michigan State defensive back Justin Layne has inked a four-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced on Thursday.

Layne was selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, taken with the 83rd overall pick. According to the team, the former Spartans was the last of Pittsburgh’s draft selections to ink a contract deal.

The Steelers really liked Layne’s quickness, size and competitiveness. Now that he’s officially signed, the defensive back is hoping to carve out a role for himself in Pittsburgh’s defensive rotation.

“There is something I am learning every day,” Layne said, according to Steelers.com. “A lot of checks, reads. It’s not just one call. It could be three different calls in one play. It’s tough to adapt but I am learning every day. I am trying to get in shape and learn the plays.”

Layne appeared in 34 games during his college career at Michigan State, making 26 starts. He ended his career with 130 tackles, 24 passes defended and three interceptions.
