Tom Izzo has Michigan State back on top of the Big Ten. And, on Sunday, the Spartans capped their outright conference title with a bang.

Facing archrival Michigan, Izzo’s group raced out to a 20-6 lead in a dominant start. At one point, the Wolverines had more turnovers than points scored, and MSU never looked back.

Michigan State built a 50-28 halftime lead and was never in real danger of relinquishing that lead. The Spartans eventually cruised to a 79-62 victory, though the end did produce some drama between the bitter rivals.

Tre Holloman, a junior point guard, led MSU with 20 points off the bench. A veteran leader, Holloman has embraced the bench role after the ascension of Jase Richardson into the starting lineup, and Holloman delivered a statement beyond his game in the final seconds of Sunday’s contest.

With 37 seconds to go, Izzo began pulling his seniors, including Szymon Zapala, with the final outcome already decided. A longstanding tradition involves every senior kissing the midcourt Spartan logo as they come off the court in the final home game of their careers.

However, two Michigan players — Phat Phat Brooks and LJ Cason — were standing on the Spartan logo when the substitution began. Holloman approached those two Wolverines and the trio began jawing without any movement. Holloman then shoved both Wolverines, setting off a brief scrum on the court.

Officials were able to get control of the incident quickly without a major altercation ensuing. Here’s how it looked and sounded on the CBS broadcast:

After the game, Tom Izzo not only defended Holloman’s actions but bestowed a special honor on the junior. Izzo was adamant that “nobody” will change MSU’s traditions and allowed Holloman to kiss the logo, a rare occurrence for non-seniors.

“About 25-35 years ago, we had a little happening here, and I give Michigan a lot of credit, (Dusty May’s) done a helluva job. I’m serious, but we’ve got a tradition here. Nobody — nobody — is changing our tradition,” claimed Izzo. “So Tre Holloman, come here a minute.

“I don’t want you doing that very often, but this one time, kiss that freakin’ ‘S’ like you’re supposed to.”

With the win, MSU caps its first outright B1G title since 2018, winning the league by 3 games over Maryland and Michigan. The Spartans will be the top overall seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and have not won the regular-season and conference tournament titles in the same season since 2019.
