Tom Izzo reveals preseason injury for Jaden Akins
Tom Izzo is back for more, entering his 28th season as head coach at Michigan State. This year, the Spartans return some key pieces from last year’s team in what could be a major season in East Lansing.
Izzo addressed the media on Monday with MSU returning to its official practice schedule with the 2023-24 season right around the corner. Unfortunately, Izzo announced an ailment for Jaden Akins after a breakout performance a season ago.
According to Izzo, Akins has a sprained ankle from Saturday’s workout. The good news is it does not appear to be a major injury, but it is certainly something to keep an eye on moving forward.
First (official) practice of the @MSU_Basketball season and Tom Izzo is set to kick off season No. 28 at the helm!
Izzo said Jaden Akins suffered a “slight ankle sprain” Saturday but should be fine and everyone else is feeling good. Says he has plenty of depth this year. pic.twitter.com/Q786ywrhNC

Akins’ start to the season a year ago was delayed as he battled a foot injury. Fortunately, he was able to produce a breakout performance and was among the most improved players on Michigan State’s roster.
Akins finished the season with 9.8 poins, 4 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 42% from 3-point range. He’s in line to be a major contributor again, provided he gets over this injury quickly.
