Tom Izzo may not have the most experience in the football world, but he loves Michigan State. The legendary head basketball coach has traditionally been extremely supportive and a regular advocate for Spartan football.

Izzo emphasized the importance of football at Michigan State during Tuesday’s basketball media day via MLive’s Matt Wentzel. Izzo noted that football is the most important sport in East Lansing, not basketball.

Though his realm is on the hardwood, Izzo agrees that football is better at raising money in the long run than the sport of basketball:

“Football is the most important sport here and I’ve said that,” Izzo said. “Just take a look even, I saw a special where Duke, Kentucky, Kansas – those are the basketball schools of all basketball schools and all their football is better because it’s important in the big picture of not only raising money but just exposure. I will remain a big-time football fan and do anything I can do to help.”

In regard to helping the football program, Izzo was asked about lending a hand in finding the next head coach. He promised to do anything he could to help the football program, even volunteering himself to help with the head coaching hire.

“I hope so, I really do because I think I’ve been a sounding board for a lot of hires here,” Izzo said on Tuesday during the basketball team’s media day at the Breslin Center. “When you’re here for 100 years, you should have some sounding board on what you do. That doesn’t mean I’m in on the decision making, it means I’m a sounding board.”

Should Izzo have a part in the next head coach of the football program?
