Tom Izzo and his son, Steven Izzo, combined for a memorable moment in family history!
During Sunday’s game against Rutgers, Steven was inserted late in the game during mop-up duty. He made the most of his opportunity, taking a defender off the dribble and delivering an improbable and-1 bucket for the first points of his Spartan career.
Afterward, Tom admitted it was a thrilling experience as a head coach and dad, made even better by the entire Spartan bench going crazy with the score:
“It looked just like LaPhonso Ellis at Notre Dame… That’s the thrill of a dad, it’s the thrill of a lifetime, and I love the fact that my players were probably more excited than I was,” Tom said.

As for Steven, he was even more emotional than his father. He explained the weight of the basket after spending his past 5 seasons in the program but dreaming of that moment for his entire life.
“That bucket means a lot to me because I’ve been here for 5 years. Really been here longer because my whole life I’ve been a Spartan… It’s emotional because that’s what I’ve dreamed of my entire life,” Steven explained. “I’m so grateful I got to experience with my teammates, and I’m forever grateful they welcomed me in 5 years ago and took me in and I get to experience an awesome day job with them.”
