The football gods giveth and the football gods taketh away. Michigan State experienced both on Saturday, but the ending was disappointing in East Lansing.

In what turned out to be a defensive slugfest, Michigan State found itself trailing Arizona State 10-7 with less than a minute to play, needing at least a field goal to extend the game. Somehow, the Spartans were able to get into field goal range, setting up a 42-yard attempt for Matt Coghlin.

Coghlin drilled it, tying the game at 10-10 and setting up overtime.

Or…maybe not.

After the officials reviewed the play, it was discovered that Michigan State actually had 12 players on the field on the kick attempt. The field goal was negated, forcing Coghlin to have to kick again.

The second time, Coghlin’s kick was way off the mark.

So, instead of going to overtime, Michigan State lost 10-7 to Arizona State in regulation. It was the second-straight year the Spartans fell to the Sun Devils.

Michigan State dropped to 2-1 on the season and will now enter conference play.

It was a crazy, disappointing and almost unbelievable finish for the Spartans.
