CFP Committee chair Rob Mullens cites Minnesota's lack of quality conference wins for low ranking
It is abundantly clear that Minnesota still has work to do to improve its resume.
The initial College Football Playoff Rankings were unveiled on Tuesday evening with two B1G teams sitting pretty. Those teams were No. 1 Ohio State and No. 4 Penn State.
For the Gophers, it is evident that the Committee is not sold on them as a legitimate contender. Minnesota checked in all the way at No. 17, the lowest-ranked undefeated Power 5 team. P.J. Fleck’s squad was ranked five spots lower than No. 12 Baylor who is also undefeated. Michigan and Wisconsin, two-loss B1G teams, were also ranked ahead of the Gophers.
When asked about that positioning, CFP Committee chairman Rob Mullens highlighted Minnesota’s lack of quality wins in the conference. To this point, the Gophers have feasted on B1G teams like Nebraska, Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue, and Illinois.
“When you look at Minnesota’s resume, the committee had a long discussion about it and they’ve had a great year, but of their conference opponents, they’ve only played one, Illinois, with a winning record,” said Mullens. “That’s kind of how the committee placed them at 17.”
Fortunately, Minnesota will get its shot to improve. Three of the Gophers’ last four games are against ranked opponents, including this Saturday against No. 4 Penn State. If Minnesota is able to win those games, Fleck and company will be in much better standing for the postseason.
