A former Minnesota center has found a new home.

Martice Mitchell, a freshman center for the Golden Gophers last season, will be heading to Northern Illinois to continue his college basketball career. Mitchell was one of several players from Minnesota’s 2020-21 roster to enter the transfer portal after the firing of head coach Richard Pitino.

Shortly after making the decision to part ways with Pitino, Minnesota hired former player Ben Johnson.

In one season with the Golden Gophers, Mitchell appeared in seven games and logged 23 minutes. The 6-foot-10 freshman out of Chicago totaled 9 points, 2 rebounds and a steal.

As a high school recruit, Mitchell was ranked as the No. 162 overall player in the 2020 recruiting class. He was listed as the No. 3 player from the state of Illinois and one of the Top 40 power forwards in the class. Mitchell committed to the Gophers over offers from other programs such as Xavier, Iowa, Maryland, Oregon, Rutgers, St. Louis and New Mexico.
