A former Georgia Tech linebacker is accusing Minnesota of filming the Yellow Jackets’ practice last postseason, before the two teams met at Ford Field for the Quick Lane Bowl.
On Sunday, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn told reporters that he wasn’t planning to run any plays during a particular portion of practice, due tot he high media presence around. The Tigers leader didn’t want any secrets seeping out to Minnesota before the two teams take the field in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day.
That’s when one former Georgia Tech linebacker, Jalen Johnson, chimed in on Malzahn’s comment. He accused Minnesota’s staff of getting caught filming bowl practice.
“That’s smart because Minnesota got caught last year filming our practice bowl week,” Johnson tweeted. “But I ain’t gonna say anything else.”

Minnesota had little trouble with Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane Bowl, which was the final game for Paul Johnson before his retirement. The Golden Gophers defeated the Yellow Jackets 34-10, thanks to a huge performance from Mohamed Ibrahim, who rushed for 224 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries.
Johnson was a redshirt senior last year, switching from defensive back to linebacker. He finished the season with 66 tackles, and 7.5 stops for loss.
There’s been no real mention of this until a year later, so it’s interesting that it came out a few days before Minnesota is set for its second-straight bowl game.
The Gophers finished the season 10-2.
