Minnesota’s 2022 recruiting class has a new addition.

Over the weekend, the Golden Gophers received a verbal commitment from 3-star offensive tackle Tony Nelson. The Minnesota native made his announcement public with a post on social media.

“I want to first thank God for giving me this great opportunity and for making me the person that I am today,” Nelson wrote. “I would also like to thank my parents and family for all the support that they have given me and for providing for me. I would also like to thank my high school coaches for pushing me to be the best that I can be and helping me through the recruiting process. Thanks to all my teammates for pushing me in practice and standing by me as my friend.”

Nelson is listed as a 6-foot-6, 265-pound offensive tackle out of Tracy, Minn. He does not currently have any composite rankings, but 247Sports has him listed as the No. 8 player from his home state and one of the Top 100 offensive tackles in the 2022 class.

Four schools offered Nelson during the recruiting process. He picked Minnesota over South Dakota, Dartmouth and Central Michigan.

Minnesota is up to four verbal commits in the 2022 class. Nelson is the second in-state player to give his pledge to the Gophers, joining 3-star wide receiver Kristen Hoskins out of Alexandria.
