It just never worked out for Jeff Jones at Minnesota.

The highly touted former top recruit in the Gophers’ 2014 class is reportedly transferring to Iowa Western Community College and will not play football.

He redshirted his freshman season at Minnesota because he was academically ineligible, and only played in a handful of games on special teams in 2015. Due to its lack of depth at receiver, the Minnesota coaching staff moved Jones out wide before 2015, but switched him to defensive back in the middle of the season.

He dealt with a migraine issue that plagued his development this year. As a result, Jones never even recorded an official touch with the Gophers.

A four-star recruit from Minneapolis, he was the MVP of the 2013-14 Under Armour All-America Game and was Minnesota’s “Mr. Football” in 2013.

Luckily for the Gophers, they have a pair of freshman talents at tailback in Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks. They’ll look to lead Minnesota against Central Michigan in the Quick Lane Bowl on Dec. 28.
