Chris Collins has a new home for the 2023 season.

The former North Carolina pass rusher committed to Minnesota Monday after electing to enter the transfer portal following the Tar Heels’ 9-4 season. Collins will have 1 year of eligibility remaining with the Golden Gophers.

Collins appeared in 46 games during his 5 seasons in Chapel Hill. He recorded 68 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. His best season was in 2021, when he played in 12 games and finished with 29 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Last season, Collins started 3 games and totaled 20 tackles. His best game came in a 21-17 loss to Georgia Tech, where he totaled a season-high 3 tackles.

The Golden Gophers ranked 117th nationally in sacks with 17 takedowns and ranked dead-last among B1G programs. Sophomore defensive lineman Danny Striggow totaled a team-high 3.5 sacks, while no one else on the roster recorded more than 2.

Minnesota is set to lose starting defensive lineman Thomas Rush due to graduation. Junior Trill Carter is also expected to return, though he only recorded 1 sack last season. The Golden Gophers finished 8-4, and will face Syracuse in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. ET.
