P.J. Fleck had what he would call “an elite recruiting weekend.”

In addition to picking up commitments from three 2018 recruits over the weekend, Fleck also went south of the Mason-Dixon line to add some help. Twice.

On Thursday, former Alabama defensive tackle O.J. Smith announced he was transferring to Minnesota. On Saturday, former Florida cornerback Chris Williamson announced that he would also be heading north to join the Gophers:

Williamson announced a week ago that he was transferring from Florida. He made the decision to commit to Minnesota shortly after an official visit.

Williamson will have to sit the 2017 season because of NCAA transfer rules, but he’ll be eligible to play in 2018 and 2019.

At Florida, Williamson played in nine games in 2016, including one start. He had five tackles in his first season of action. He played in five games as a reserve in 2015.

The Gophers are more familiar with Williamson’s Georgia roots. The Gainesville, Ga. native was the No. 42 cornerback and the No. 432 player overall in the 2015 class.

He’ll have a chance to start and make an immediate impact when he’s eligible in 2018.
