Minnesota is losing cornerback Beanie Bishop to the transfer portal.

Bishop announced that decision on Thursday afternoon. He will enter the portal as a graduate transfer, which means he’s able to enter the portal outside of the NCAA’s designated transfer windows while maintaining his eligibility.

Here’s his announcement:

Bishop was expected to compete for a starting role for the Gophers in 2023. He joined Minnesota’s defense prior to the 2022 season and recorded 29 tackles and 1 sack in his lone year with the program.

Prior to transferring to Minnesota, Bishop played 4 seasons at Western Kentucky. He has 1 year of eligibility remaining.

Bishop’s departure will have an impact on Minnesota’s cornerback depth. However, the Gophers still have players like Justin Walley and Ryan Stapp at the position. There’s also younger cornerbacks such as Rhyland Kelly and Tariq Watson who are still on the roster.

Minnesota’s 2023 spring game is scheduled for April 22.
