Minnesota is losing another running back to the transfer portal.

Friday evening, Mar’Keise Irving announced on Twitter that he has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. He spent just one season with the Golden Gophers and was a member of the team’s 2021 recruiting class.

Irving played a significant role out of the backfield last season as Minnesota lost multiple running backs to injuries. Irving rushed for 699 yards and 4 touchdowns on 133 carries.

“I want to thank my coaches, teammates and the University of Minnesota,” Irving wrote. “I have entered the transfer portal.”

Irving is the latest Minnesota running back to enter the transfer portal since last season. The Gophers also lost Cam Wiley and Ky Thomas.

The best performance from Irving last season came in a win over Northwestern, when he rushed for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had 105 yards and a touchdown against Maryland and racked up 129 yards — a career-best — against West Virginia in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

Minnesota finished last season with a 9-4 record. The Gophers are returning both Mohamed Ibrahim and Trey Potts to the backfield, which might’ve put Irving lower on the depth chart in 2022.

Irving will have three years of eligibility to use at his next destination.
