Minnesota’s 2019 recruiting class is one of the best the program has enjoyed since rankings in the area have become a thing. Along with some quality 4-star athletes, P.J. Fleck also received a signature and commitment from the nephew of a Legend.
Literally.
Dynamic 3-star wide receiver Mike Brown-Stephens signed his Letter of Intent on the first day of the Early Signing Period, ensuring his commitment to the Gophers. And he just so happens to be the nephew of pop star John Legend. The singer and performer couldn’t have been prouder.
“So proud of my nephew [Mike Brown-Stephens]!” Legend said on Twitter. “This will present a dilemma for me during Ohio St-Minnesota games, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

Brown-Stephens was a nice addition to Minnesota’s 2019 class, which ranks 36th nationally and eighth in the B1G. The wide receiver was ranked as one of the top 50 players out of Ohio, a state rich in football talent.
Legend did voice some concern about when the Gophers take on his favorite team — the Buckeyes — but that wouldn’t be an issue until 2021, when Minnesota opens the season by hosting Ohio State. Of course there could be a clash in the B1G Championship Game somewhere in that time.
Ohio State will then host Minnesota in 2023.
Minnesota’s recruiting class had plenty of stars. But who knew it already had a Legend?
