Minnesota releases depth chart for season opener with South Dakota State
Minnesota’s season opener is nearly here!
The Golden Gophers kick-off 2019 action Thursday evening against South Dakota State and P.J. Fleck is looking to lead his team to another bowl game.
As we are now officially in Week 1 of the season, Minnesota officially released the depth chart Tuesday for the season opener. Some positions do have the dreaded “OR” listed, but most starting spots have been solidified.

One thing the Gophers have going for them this season is a number of returners on both sides of the ball. The team did take a hit when quarterback Zack Annexstad went down with an injury, but Tanner Morgan is capable and has plenty of weapons. Starting wide receivers Rashod Bateman and Tyler Johnson return to give Morgan two electric playmakers to throw to.
In the backfield, Mohamed Ibrahim OR Rodney Smith is listed as the starting running back. The duo headlines a packed running back group that also features Bryce Williams and Cam Wiley on the depth chart.
Defensively, Minnesota has got to be happy about getting defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr. back on the field after he missed much of 2018 with an injury. The defensive front also features some experienced players led by senior Carter Coughlin.
Hopefully, this group has big things in store for it. Kickoff for Thursday’s opener is set for 9 pm EST on FS1.
