Minnesota is expected to hire former Kent State offensive coordinator Andrew Sowder as the program’s next tight ends coach.

Sowder has been Kent State’s offensive coordinator since December 2017. For the last 5 seasons, Sowder oversaw Kent State’s offense and he also worked with the quarterbacks and tight ends at Kent State. He will be heading to Minnesota and working directly with the tight ends.

Under Sowder’s guidance, Kent State emerged as one of the best offenses in the MAC since 2018. Sowder will be able to use his experience as an offensive coordinator to help Minnesota’s tight ends for the 2023 season.

Kent State finished the 2022 season with a 5-7 record. Despite the losing record, Kent State’s offense was 2nd in yards per game in the MAC with 417.9 per game. The Golden Flashes were ranked in the top 5 in points per game in the MAC.

Sowder has a track record of scoring points and producing yards. He will be tasked with doing the same with Minnesota’s tight ends. Sowder will replace Greg Harbaugh Jr. as Minnesota’s tight ends coach. Harbaugh was promoted to the co-offensive coordinator position.

Before he was Kent State’s offensive coordinator, Sowder was San Jose State’s offensive coordinator and tight ends coach in the 2017 season.

Minnesota went 9-4 in the 2022 season.
