Minnesota will enter 2019 with a strong backfield in place.

The Golden Gophers looked good early on in that position last season with Rodney Smith leading the way. Unfortunately, he went down with an injury early on and missed the majority of the season.

Thankfully, Mohamed Ibrahim and Bryce Williams were ready. Both were productive as freshmen, but Ibrahim led the way with 1,160 yards on the ground and nine touchdowns.

Now getting ready for this season, the Gophers look as deep and talented as any backfield in the country. Ibrahim, Williams, and Smith are all returning and could prove to be the focal point of the offense.

During Sunday’s first game week press conference of the season, Ibrahim discussed the running back group. He said the backfield as a whole is ready for whatever it takes, whether that be himself or Smith. The group is confident they will be able to feed off each other all season long.

Minnesota Football shared his comment:

Hopefully, the ground game can get off to a fast start in Thursday’s opener against South Dakota State. Kickoff is set for 9 pm EST on FS1.
