P.J. Fleck’s decision to part ways with defensive coordinator Robb Smith following Minnesota’s 55-31 loss to Illinois was a bit of a surprise. The firing wasn’t much of a shock, but the timing certainly was.

The Gophers have just three games left in the regular season. It’s interesting that Fleck opted to make a move this late in the year, but it’s clear he’s trying to salvage something as the 2018 campaign comes to an end.

On Tuesday, Fleck made it clear that his decision to fire Smith wasn’t because of the players, but he wanted to make the change for them.

“This wasn’t because of them, this is for them, as we continue to move forward,” Fleck said. “Once you make your mind up, I believe as a leader…you don’t hold onto that very long.”

Minnesota’s defense started the year strong but has struggled mightily in B1G play. The Gophers have surrendered an average of 43.2 points per game against conference opponents this season. They also rank in the bottom of the B1G in most statistical categories, including total defense (11th), rush defense (11th) and pass defense (8th).

The Gophers are 4-5 on the season with just one B1G win. They would need to win two of their final three games to earn a postseason bid. Minnesota closes out the year with Purdue, Northwestern and Wisconsin.

Earlier this week, Minnesota linebacker Carter Coughlin vowed that Minnesota would finish the season “the right way.” It’ll have a chance to prove it’s a different club this weekend against the Boilers.
