One coach that is joining Minnesota for 2020 is Mike Sanford. Sanford was an offensive coordinator at Utah State this past season and will be the new OC for the Gophers. He talked about his relationship with head coach P.J. Fleck recently and Fleck talked a lot about the positives of Sanford:

“What I wanted to do was bring Mike Sanford in here to coach the quarterbacks and obviously be the offensive coordinator, but I love the coordinator being in charge of the quarterbacks and Mike Sanford brings a wealth of knowledge,” Fleck said.

“In terms of the quarterback position / offensive coordinator type experience playing at Boise State with the success they had. Then coordinating at Boise State with the success they had, then Notre Dame, then already being a young head coach which I know what it’s like, so it’s nice to have that person on your staff. Then going to Utah State and now here and he’s only 37 years old.

“You see that whole resume and you can’t wait to work with somebody like that. We’ve known each other five or six years been really close and really good friends. And I knew it was only a matter of time where I could hire him, but I just had to have the opportunity because he’s way beyond being a position coach now, so it had to be the right time and right fit. And I love his passion, his energy, the way he recruits. He’s high energy. He cares high character individual, spiritual life is very important to him, and I can’t wait for our players to get around him because his energy is infectious.”

Fleck, Sanford and the Golden Gophers will begin their 2020 campaign on Sept. 3 against Florida Atlantic at home.
