For the unaware, it may come as a surprise that John Legend is one of Minnesota’s biggest football fans.

The reason is actually quite simple: family. Legend’s nephew is Mike Brown-Stephens, a freshman wide receiver for the Golden Gophers.

Legend just happened to be on hand to check out his nephew and Minnesota’s thrilling victory over Fresno State, and he even delivered a post-game speech in the locker room. Legend claimed he wasn’t a motivational speaker, but he praised the Gophers before finishing with a special tagline:

“Uncle Johnny is not a motivational speaker,” explained Legend, “But it was nice to come to my first Minnesota game, see y’all win in double overtime. It was pretty amazing. Congratulations to everybody. I am proud of my nephew but I’m proud of all y’all…I’ve never said this before in my life, but row the boat!”
