Nebraska began 2022 fall camp with a quarterback battle. A pair of transfers, Casey Thompson and Chubba Purdy, opened as the top 2 signal-callers. The Big Ten Network was in Lincoln to check out practice, and analyst Dave Revsine weighed in on the competition.

Revsine tweeted Thursday that Thompson, a Texas transfer, is the “clear leader” over Purdy, a transfer from Florida State. Revsine, though, did note Purdy’s ability to extend plays.

It’s no surprise that Thompson is out in front of Purdy. Thompson has been in college since 2018. He has 3 seasons of experience after redshirting his first year in Austin. Last season, Thompson was 165-of-261 passing for 2,113 yards, 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He also ran the ball 55 times for 157 yards and 4 TDs in 2021.

Purdy played 4 games in his time at Florida State. He was 27-of-53 as a passer in 2020, throwing 2 touchdowns and an interception. He also ran the ball 19 times for 57 yards that season. In 2021, Purdy played in 1 game, against UMass, going 5-of-5 passing for 98 yards and rushing once for 5 yards. Purdy was limited this spring.
