Less than a week into his new job, Bryan Applewhite says it still hasn’t completely sunk in that he’s the new Nebraska running backs coach.

Applewhite joined Scott Frost’s coaching staff last week after 2 seasons at TCU. He appeared Wednesday on the “Husker Sports Nightly” radio program.

“Growing up and going to high school in eastern Colorado, and then to get the phone call from coach Frost offering me the job — it was a dream come true,” Applewhite said during his radio appearance, per the Lincoln Journal Star. “You couldn’t go to school when I was in middle school and not be able to talk about the Nebraska-CU game. You better be able to talk about all the Nebraska players, you better be able to talk about what happened and who scored what touchdown.

“It just feels surreal still. It still hasn’t sunk in.”

Applewhite has been in coaching since 1999, getting his start at Northern Colorado as a grad assistant. He coached running backs at Wyoming, Montana State, Louisiana-Monroe and Colorado State before the TCU gig.

Applewhite’s already excited about the opportunity to coach Anthony Grant, the transfer running back the Cornhuskers recently landed.

“Anthony’s an explosive kid. He has tremendous vision,” Applewhite said of Grant, per the Journal Star. “He has incredible instincts. He’s tough. He’s got great hands out of the backfield. I was just tickled to death, excited to get the opportunity to work with him.”
