Casey Thompson had a lot of opportunities when he decided to enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Landing a young, experienced quarterback with plenty of upside are attractive qualities to every team in college football.

Thompson picked Nebraska and is now expected to jump into the starting role in his first year on campus. Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple has tabbed him as the No. 1 quarterback this spring, though competition will continue through fall camp.

Why did Thompson settle on Nebraska?

The former Texas quarterback rattled off a list of reasons, according to Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald. Speaking with reporters Wednesday, the new Nebraska quarterback said Mark Whipple’s offense, Scott Frost’s offense, the relationship between his father and new wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph were all factors.

Additionally, Thompson said there’s no shortage of NIL opportunities in Lincoln — even more than at Texas. He cited Lincoln’s “close-knit” connection over what’s available in Austin.

All of it played a role in Thompson’s decision and it paid off for the Huskers. Even though they lost a 4-year starter to the transfer portal, head coach Scott Frost and his staff have been pleased with what they’ve seen from the ex-Longhorn so far.
