College football insider updates hot seat status of Nebraska coach Scott Frost
With Nebraska struggling during his time as coach, Scott Frost entered this season with a lot of pressure. So far this season, Nebraska is off to a 3-3 start, most recently handling Northwestern 56-7.
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman gave his opinion on whether Frost remains on the hot seat at the midway point of the season:
No doubt this has not worked out the way that many expected from the former Nebraska quarterback who did such a terrific job at UCF. Frost opened with three consecutive losing seasons and was 9-17 in Big Ten play. This year started horribly with a loss to Illinois, but the Huskers have played hard against some good teams and look much improved. His record in one-score games is putrid at 5-15, but after close losses to Oklahoma and Michigan State, his team walloped Northwestern 56-7 to go to 3-3. The rest of the schedule features three top-10 teams — Michigan, OSU and Iowa — but each has to come to Lincoln. He also has a big buyout.
Frost returned to his alma mater after guiding upstart UCF to an undefeated season in 2017.
The hope was that Nebraska would return to its glory days under Frost. However, Nebraska is coming off a 3-5 season in 2020 and has had losing seasons in all three years under Frost. Nebraska hasn’t had a winning season since 2016 and hasn’t won a bowl game since 2015.
Next up for Nebraska is a big challenge vs. visiting No. 9 Michigan on Oct. 9 (7:30 p.m. EST/ABC).
