Gene Chinander, the father of Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander, was killed a fatal car accident on Thursday afternoon in Iowa, according to multiple reports. He was 69 years old.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Gene was driving southbound on Highway 14 near Allison, Iowa. He failed to stop at the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 14 and his truck veered off the road and collided with a parked semi trailer.

Gene was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.

Erik has been the defensive coordinator at Nebraska since the 2018 season. Before arriving in Lincoln, he was also on Scott Frost’s staff at UCF for two seasons.
