Frank Solich named to 2024 College Football Hall of Fame class
Frank Solich is going into the College Football Hall of Fame.
On Monday, the National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame revealed the 22 individuals who will make up the Class of 2024. The class is comprised of 19 players and three coaches. Solich will become the seventh Nebraska coach to enter the Hall and the 27th Husker all-time.
“Frank Solich is very deserving of his selection in the College Football Hall of Fame. I want to thank him and congratulate him on all that he has done for the sport of football,” said former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne in a release. “Most assistant coaches have areas of strengths and weaknesses, but Frank was accomplished in all areas so I recommended that he become the head coach in 1998. He won a Big 12 championship, played for a National Championship, and went to a bowl game each year at Nebraska.”
Added former Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch: “I can’t think of a better person, player, coach, and friend to be joining the College Football Hall of Fame. Frank Solich has earned it the hard way, through perseverance and dedication to college football. I am honored to have played for him at the University of Nebraska. Congrats to Coach Solich and his family.”
Solich was a Nebraska lifer — a fullback for Bob Devaney as a player, an assistant on Tom Osborne’s national championship-winning staff, and then Osborne’s hand-picked successor.
As the Husker head coach, Solich went 58-19 in six seasons (1998 to 2003). The Huskers finished No. 3 in the AP poll in 1999 after beating Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl. Solich also coached Crouch to a Heisman Trophy in 2001.
Following his firing — a decision that still resonates with Nebraska fans today — Solich landed the head coaching job at Ohio, where he won 115 games in 16 years and took the Bobcats to 11 bowl games. He retired as the winningest coach in the history of the Mid-American Conference.
The 2024 class will be officially inducted during the 66th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10, 2024, in Las Vegas. Solich will also be recognized at a to-be-determined Nebraska home game this fall.
