Nebraska hoops has received word that Derrick Walker’s suspension will be slightly reduced, according to head coach Fred Hoiberg.

During Wednesday’s radio show appearance, Hoiberg indicated that the NCAA has reduced Walker’s suspension from 16 games to 14 games. The reason for the reduction is the shortened schedule for all teams due to the ongoing pandemic.

Sam McKewon with the Omaha World-Herald shared Hoiberg’s update:

Walker is a transfer to the Huskers after spending his first two collegiate seasons at Tennessee. He redshirted in the 2019-20 season and will be eligible to participate once his suspension is over.

Walker was suspended due to something that occurred during his time with the Volunteers, but Hoiberg has spoken highly of Walker since he arrived in Lincoln.

Taking a look at Nebraska’s schedule, the reduction of his suspension means Walker should be cleared for the Jan. 16 road game against Maryland. That is provided every game is played without cancellation, and it is unclear if canceled games will count toward his suspension total.
