Garret McGuire is entering his first season as the wide receivers coach for Nebraska and new head coach Matt Rhule.

On Tuesday, McGuire met with the media to discuss how the spring is going and his vision for the wide receivers. Among other things, he touched on the emphasis and search for speed under Rhule.

McGuire particularly noted the speed as “Husker speed” and explained what that attribute looks like and means to the program:

“Playing with overwhelming effort, play-after-play,” said McGuire.

He also addressed recruiting and Nebraska’s emphasis on taking players based on their key physical attributes and athleticism. While the tape is still important, McGuire noted the program is looking for those athletes that fit the developmental model of the Huskers.

“If you see the trend in recruiting, we will always recruit based on height, weight, speed,” explained McGuire. “The tape is kind of the advantage but we want to get guys that are tall, long and fast, so that’s why it’s so important to develop.”

We’ll see how that works out for the program, but it sounds like Rhule’s vision is truly in place and gaining traction throughout the spring.
