Somehow, Nebraska’s sellout streak was at the center of controversy last week. When it was revealed that several tickets still remained available for Saturday’s game against Fordham, two donors purchased all of them to ensure the streak lasted at least one more game.

The tickets were put to great use, being donated to underprivileged children and their parents/guardians. Nearly 2,000 children saw their first Husker game live in Memorial Stadium on Saturday, thanks to Nebraska’s Red Carpet Experience.

Yet, for some reason, there were some arguing that Nebraska’s sellout streak was saved by a technicality. That really wasn’t the point of the weekend, though. Quarterback Adrian Martinez understood what it meant to welcome so many kids into Memorial Stadium.

“There was a lot of noise made about the sellout streak and the amount of fans that were gonna be in the stands. You can focus on that side or there’s the other side where, man, what an opportunity some of these kids who have never had an opportunity to come to a game got (Saturday),” Martinez said.

“After the game, I got to take a picture with the Boys and Girls Club of Lincoln. You could just see the joy on their faces. Just how much it meant to them to be there. They had never experienced anything like that. I’m just blessed to be in the position I’m in to have that sort of impact. It was amazing. I hope they enjoyed it.”

The kids in attendance had the opportunity to see a big Nebraska win, downing Fordham 52-7.

Martinez put on quite a show, completing 17-of-23 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown. He rushed for 33 yards and 2 scores on 8 carries.
