Nebraska officially hired former Butkus Award winner Trev Alberts to be its next athletic director on Wednesday morning.
Alberts played for Nebraska in the early 1990s and is one of the most decorates Huskers of that era. His No. 34 jersey is retired as he is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
Alberts has been the athletic director at Omaha since 2009. He succeeds Bill Moos, who announced his retirement back in June.
“I’m just going to tell you that I could not be more pleased,” chancellor Ronnie Greene said at a press conference on Wednesday. “I am 100 percent confident that this is the right person to lead Husker athletics moving forward.”
Alberts will officially begin his role on Monday, July 19.
First on Alberts’ agenda will be to get the football program back on track. The Huskers have struggled under coach Scott Frost and haven’t made a bowl game since 2016. However, Alberts expressed confidence in Frost’s ability to turn things around:
Alberts: “I believe in Scott and want to be helpful.”
Says he has to earn Frost’s trust – and the trust of other coaches.

Alberts also gave some insight into how he anticipates handling new Name, Image and Likeness rules across college football:
Alberts says Nebraska will embrace NIL. “We’re going to be comfortable being uncomfortable.” #huskers
Said half of ADs in the business “want to hang on to the past.” That won’t be him.
