Hot seat? Kirk Herbstreit, Robert Griffin III think Nebraska should be patient with Scott Frost
There’s a ton of pressure on Scott Frost as he heads into his fourth season at the helm of Nebraska. Scott returned to his alma mater after guiding upstart UCF to an undefeated season in 2017.
The hope was that Nebraska would return to its glory days under Frost. However, Nebraska is coming off a 3-5 season in 2020 and has had losing seasons in all three years under Frost. Nebraska hasn’t had a winning season since 2016 and hasn’t won a bowl game since 2015.
Yet during the Week 0 episode of College GameDay, Kirk Herbstreit and Robert Griffin III are asking the public to exercise patience on the Nebraska coach.
Herbstreit believes Nebraska’s recent woes under Frost aren’t a personal indictment.
“This is a Nebraska thing, this is not a Scott Frost thing. They’ve had losing seasons five of the last six years. Losing seasons. I hope they’re patient with him. I hope they let him try to bring back the glory years,” Herbstreit said. “Because to build this culture back up, it takes time. It’s not going to be done in two years, three years. You gotta get the pieces there. We’ll see how they get started today.
Griffin added an interesting comparison for Frost.
“I think we’re not emphasizing enough how Scott Frost is Nebraska’s Tim Tebow. He’s loved, he’s revered. he’s the prodigal son. He’s the bringer of national championships,” Griffin said. “I think everyone, personally, wants it to stay Frosty in Lincoln.
Meanwhile, Desmond Howard thinks Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez needs to take the next step in his development in order for a winning season in 2021.
“You know Scott Frost, you know what he’s trying to do with the offense,” Howard said. “But it gets stifled because Adrian Martinez — the two things you can’t do as a quarterback is turned the ball over and offensively never get penalized. And they’re turning the ball over at an incredible clip. It stifles drives, it gives your opponents extra possessions and that kills their offense and kills morale of the whole team.
Nebraska’s Week 0 matchup vs. Illinois is set for 1 p.m. (EST) and is on FOX.
