Huskers LB withdraws name from transfer portal, plans to continue career at Nebraska
Nebraska’s linebacker room received some great news on Friday afternoon.
According to Parker Gabriel of the Journal Star, Pheldarius Payne, an outside linebacker, has decided to withdraw his name from the NCAA transfer portal and plans to stay at Nebraska. He initially put his name into the database on Dec. 6.
Payne started his career at Lackawanna Community College in Pennsylvania but has spent the past two seasons with the Huskers. He tallied 21 tackles during the 2020 campaign and added 19 to his career total during this fall.
Because of an injury, the outside linebacker missed the final two games of the 2021 campaign. He still has one year of eligibility to use in Lincoln.
Nebraska ended the 2021 season with a 3-9 record, losing all 9 contests by 9 points or less, setting a new college football record. The Huskers suffered 8 losses in one-possession games.
Having Payne back in the mix gives Nebraska more experience at the linebacker position. It will be a huge asset for the Huskers when the 2022 campaign kicks off, as the program attempts to get back to the postseason.
