Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez has no plans of slowing down. Although he’s struggled the past two seasons, he’s still motivated to be a leader and improving his game.
Martinez will enter the 2021 season as a fourth-year starter for the Huskers. There is a lot of pressure on Nebraska to get back to the postseason this year after missing a bowl game the first three seasons under Scott Frost.
Speaking on Sports Nightly this week, Martinez says he’s optimistic about where the team stands heading into the season. He believes the Huskers are working hard and have the talent.
“I feel really good about where we’re at as a team — and the work we’re putting in,” Martinez said, according to Omaha World-Herald.
Last season, Martinez threw for 1,055 yards with 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He also rushed for 521 yards and 7 additional touchdowns. At some points through the season, though, Martinez was substituted out for Luke McCaffrey while the Huskers tried to find an answer under center.
Even through the adversity, Martinez continued to be a leader. And his mindset is still the same.
“I’ve put a lot of effort — a lot of blood, sweat and tears — into this program, and I’m not stopping,” Martinez said. “I feel really good, and I think we’re working harder than ever. And that’s a great feeling. It means a lot for this program this year, for myself, and all I can really do is focus on the day-to-day — the 1% better every day.”
Martinez will have to be ready to go immediately in 2021, with the Huskers opening the season with a road game against Illinois in Week 0. The outcome of that game could dictate an awful lot for Nebraska’s season.
