Joel Klatt says Nebraska looked like a Scott Frost-led team in loss to Illinois
Joel Klatt was not impressed with Nebraska’s performance against Illinois in Week 4.
The No. 22 Cornhuskers fell to the No. 24 Fighting Illini in overtime by a score of 31-24. However, the Huskers held the lead for much of the 1st half and had plenty of chances in the 2nd half to pull away.
Instead, the Huskers floundered in OT and suffered their 1st loss of the season. Klatt mentioned that this loss reminded him of the Scott Frost Nebraska teams that consistently underachieved.
“That felt a lot like Scott Frost Nebraska teams who just couldn’t get out of their own way late in games, those 1-score games,” said Klatt during Saturday’s broadcast of the Ohio State vs. Marshall game. “They miss a wide-open receiver, but I will say this. Bret Bielema is a hell of a football coach, and Luke Altmyer played a fantastic game on the road in a hostile environment. That was a great win for Illinois.”
That quote probably evokes terrifying flashbacks for the Husker faithful. During Frost’s tenure at Nebraska, the team went 16-31, which is unacceptable for a program like Nebraska.
However, Klatt did give the Illini their flowers as well. Nebraska is not an easy place to play, and the Fighting Illini never looked rattled. Now, the team has an impressive conference win to put on their resume after just Week 4.
It will be interesting to see how Nebraska responds to this loss. The Frost teams at Nebraska would’ve spiraled in a situation like this. This Huskers team has an opportunity to quickly move past the loss, however, with games against Purdue and Rutgers next up.
