Logan Smothers has spent three seasons at Nebraska after joining the program as a 4-star recruit in the 2020 recruiting class. As of Tuesday, reports indicate Smothers will hit the transfer portal and investigate a new destination for the 2023 college football season.

According to Chris Hummer with 247 Sports, Smothers is expected to enter the transfer portal coming out of Nebraska’s spring practices. Smothers originally joined the Huskers as a 4-star QB and the No. 14 dual-threat QB in the country for the 2020 recruiting class per the 247 Sports Composite.

Smothers has seen limited playing time but did appear in multiple games during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. In the 2021 season finale against Iowa, Smothers threw for 198 yards and added 64 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns against a tough Hawkeye defense.

In the 2022 season, Smothers split playing time with Chubba Purdy against Minnesota and Michigan while Casey Thompson was injured. He passed for 80 yards in a loss to the Gophers but struggled against the Wolverines.

With the addition of Jeff Sims via the transfer portal, Thompson and Sims are likely to be QB1 and QB2 on Nebraska’s depth chart for the 2023 season. Smothers and Purdy are likely well behind those two on the depth chart and were battling to remain QB3 for the season.

Tuesday has been a busy day for the Huskers with QB Richard Torres and WR Victor Jones Jr. also announcing plans to enter the portal.
