Marcus Satterfield and Garrett McGuire met with the media Monday after the latest practice for Nebraska. One area that drew a number of questions was the wide receiver room for the Huskers.
Satterfield noted a need to build depth at WR with the season quickly approaching. The offensive coordinator noted there are some players expected to come back off of injury to help that room, and he noted there are some young players that will see action early on.
“We definitely need to build some depth in that (WR) room. We’ve got some guys coming back off of injuries that will help us. I think it’s a great opportunity for us to see what these young kids can do,” said Satterfield. “We have some young wideouts that are very talented and explosive. They’re gonna get a chance. If they can do it practice, they can do it in a game so they’ll get a chance early to show what they can do.”
While Satterfield highlighted the young guys, McGuire pointed to Baylor transfer and veteran wideout Josh Fleeks as a player that has been impressive. McGuire noted Nebraska is moving Fleeks around a bit in camp, but the receiver has still produced some “whoa” moments in practice
“We’re moving him around because he’s so dynamic with the football. The mental (side) is a little bit more, but he’s attacking it. He’s obviously a great, great competitor,” said McGuire. “That’s one thing you can always say about Josh, and he’s doing a great job. He’s having a great camp. He’s made a couple of plays where you’re like ‘Whoa!'”
Fleeks was an original member of the 2018 recruiting class with 69 career catches and over 700 yards at Baylor. He was also used in the return game, and it sounds like Fleeks will get a chance to play a large role this season.
