Marcus Satterfield praises Jeff Sims' physical running: 'It sounded different'
Marcus Satterfield knows there is plenty to clean up from Nebraska’s Week 1 loss to Minnesota. For the offense, that includes 4 total turnovers and 3 interceptions thrown by quarterback Jeff Sims.
Despite the miscues by Sims, Satterfield highlighted the QB for his competitiveness on the road. He also knew Sims would use his feet, but the offensive coordinator said his physical running came as a surprise.
“Just trust his training. He was under control, I thought he had an unbelievable game from a competitive standpoint. I knew he would be able to use his feet and we could use him in the QB run game, but I wasn’t aware he would run that physically,” said Satterfield at his weekly press conference. “Like he was a physical runner the other night and that was good to see. I think that’s something he can build on.”
Asked about the surprise of Sims’ running, Satterfield said it sounded different on the field. He also admitted it was “cool” that Sims wasn’t trying to slide or avoid contact.
“I knew in the spring he was live, but they weren’t allowed to hit him. It wasn’t like he was breaking tackles or anything, just felt really different on the field,” Satterfield explained. “He ran a counter one time and 2 guys came and hit him and he kind of delivered a blow and popped up. I thought it was pretty cool, he wasn’t trying to slide. We want him to take care of himself, and slide when he needs to, but he was running through tackles. It sounded different out there.”
Despite the 3 interceptions, Sims was the leading rusher for the Huskers in Week 1. If he is able to cut down on interceptions, he could produce dynamic numbers as Nebraska travels to face Colorado in Week 2.
