Matt Lubick says Nebraska wants one primary RB to be workhorse
Nebraska may have an incredibly deep and talented running back room, but offensive coordinator Matt Lubick says there’s still going to be one primary guy carrying the heavy load this fall.
Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Lubick touched on the running back situation for the Huskers as they prepare for the season opener on Saturday against Illinois. It’s still pretty secretive in Lincoln right now.
Lubick did not reveal who will be the No. 1 running back on Saturday in Champaign but he did he did say that there are three players who have surfaced as capable of doing a majority of the work. Markese Stepp, Gabe Ervin and Sevion Morrison were all mentioned, per Parker Gabriel of Huskers Extra.
Matt Lubick says the #Huskers know who the No. 1 RB is but isn’t saying. He thinks any of Stepp, Ervin and Morrison can handle the workload.

Lubick also suggest that, whoever the lead back is on Saturday, could see anywhere from “20-26” carries, per Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald.

Neither Nebraska nor Illinois released a depth chart during press conferences on Monday. Both teams are staying pretty secretive heading into that Week 0 showdown.
Whoever is in the backfield for the Huskers first on Saturday, expect him to carry a heavy workload against the Illini.
