Matt Rhule addressed the overnight arrest of incoming Georgia transfer Arik Gilbert Tuesday afternoon at Huskers practice.

Gilbert was arrested and is facing a burglary charge after being apprehended by officers while carrying a bag that contained $1,672 in vape products, Delta 8, cigars and lighters. The store in question was closed at the time and the estimated damage sits at $650.

Here’s what Rhule had to say about the arrest.

“Really disappointed, really sad for him,” Rhule said. “When we took Arik, we knew we had a good group of people who could help him through some of the issues he’s dealing with in his life. Had been really proud of the job he had done in the spring and summer. To be honest, during camp he’s had some struggles. He’s been working to overcome them. We have a great group of people who are trying to help him and then obviously last night happened, so I don’t have a lot of details.”

Here’s Rhule’s full comments, as well as more from Tuesday’s press conference:

Gilbert has yet to be able to settle down in college football. He was at one time committed to Florida, then LSU before ending up at Georgia. He played for the Bulldogs in 2021 and 2022 before transferring to Nebraska this past offseason. His best season came at LSU in 2020, where he totaled 368 receiving yards for 2 touchdowns.

The former 5-star prospect is still awaiting a decision on his eligibility status for 2023, though last night’s events certainly will not help his case to play for the Huskers this season.
