Matt Rhule announces multiple season-ending injuries, including Nebraska's leading rusher
Matt Rhule and Nebraska are coming out of Week 3 and the first victory for the head coach in Lincoln. Unfortunately, any good vibes from the game were gone quickly with Rhule confirming a trio of season-ending injuries on Monday.
Two of those injuries came to the running back room, including a season-ending injury to leading rusher Gabe Ervin Jr. Rahmir Johnson and defensive back Dwight Bootle are also out for the season.
Rhule announced Ervin’s injury as a dislocated hip, a major setback for the starting RB of the Huskers. Ervin had 196 yards through 3 games and was averaging 5.2 yards per carry. He took a back seat in 2022 to Anthony Grant after dealing with a season-ending injury during his freshman campaign in 2021.
Johnson had 65 yards rushing and 3 catches in limited action to begin the year. Bootle had 2 tackles so far this season.
The good news for Nebraska is Anthony Grant — the team’s leading rusher with 915 yards a season ago — is still on the roster. Rhule announced during training camp Grant was down on the depth chart to begin the season due to fumbling issues, but Nebraska likely will be forced to use him in a more feature role moving forward.
Nebraska gets Louisiana Tech in Week 4 with a chance to find replacement pieces for those injuries. But either way, the injuries are a major blow to Nebraska’s offense and overall depth.
