Matt Rhule has confirmed that sophomore wide receiver Malachi Coleman intends to hit the transfer portal when it opens after the regular season.

During Monday’s press conference, Rhule revealed that Coleman informed Nebraska’s coaching staff of his intentions. While Coleman is one of the early key names to reveal his intentions, Rhule also said he expects anywhere between 30-50 players to test the portal with roster limitations coming down the road.

It’s a disappointing twist for a player who was the headliner of the 2023 recruiting class as a prominent in-state prospect. Coleman also played extensively as a true freshman after injuries took a toll on Nebraska’s WR room.

Coming into 2024, Rhule discussed the likelihood that Coleman would utilize his redshirt this season after the Huskers added some depth to the receiver room. The sophomore has appeared in just one game, so his redshirt status will be preserved, giving him 3 years of eligibility remaining.

Coming out of high school, Coleman was a top-70 player nationally per the 247 Sports Composite and the top player from Nebraska for the 2023 recruiting cycle. He was the highest-rated signee for the Huskers in the cycle.

As a true freshman, Coleman appeared in 11 games with 6 starts. He recorded 8 catches for 139 yards and a touchdown.
