Matt Rhule and Nebraska are still trying to find one final win to get the team across the line of bowl eligibility. Unfortunately, one defender is shut down for the rest of the regular season, the head coach confirmed on Thursday.

When asked about the status of veteran defensive back Tommi Hill, Rhule said Nebraska shut down the defender for at least the final 2 games of the regular season:

“Tommi will be out the next 2 games. He’s tried to play. It’s obviously tough for him, he’s dealing with a lot,” said Rhule. “So, I shut him down. He’s been invited to the Senior Bowl. Maybe he’ll be ready for bowl practice.

“He’s out there but he’s playing half speed, 3/4 speed. That led to the first touchdown in this game, led to the first touchdown in the Indiana, led to the first touchdown in the Illinois game, so I feel for him. He came in here with high expectations. Had that foot injury and it’s just never quite been the same.”

Asked for clarification on who provided the final decision, Rhule said every decision is a collaboration with the player. However, he admitted the Huskers have been hurt by Hill trying to play through the injury.

“Everything’s collaboration but I can’t put him out there anymore,” Rhule explained.

Hill will finish the season with 21 total tackles and a TFL. He was dynamic to start the season and recorded a pick-6 vs. Colorado with his only interception of the season.
