Matt Rhule is a huge fan of Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims.

Sims spent 3 seasons playing for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets before announcing his transfer to Nebraska on Dec. 18. Rhule was ecstatic, saying he “fell in love with Jeff as a player early on.”

“I’ve watched a ton of Georgia Tech games and I fell in love with Jeff just as a player early on,” Rhule said during Early Signing Day. “He’s dynamic, he’s athletic, he’s smart, he’s big. He’s got accuracy. He can throw from the pocket. So when he became available, when he went into the transfer portal, I was already sold on him.”

Sims finished the 2022 season with 1,115 passing yards and 5 TDs. Sims also contributed in the ground game, finishing with 288 rushing yards and 1 rushing TD.

While Rhule loves Sims’ game, he might not be a shoo-in for the starting QB job.

Casey Thompson, who started at QB for the Huskers in 2022, announced his intention to return for the 2023 season. The news comes from Thompson’s father, Charles Thompson.

“Listen, his thinking is he left the season as a starter and he expects to return and start next season,” Charles Thompson said. “That’s where his mindset is.”

Despite Thompson’s mindset, Rhule is clearly very high on Sims’ potential. The head coach went on to say he did not begin his Nebraska looking for a transfer QB but had to land Sims when he hit the portal:

“I didn’t come in here and say, ‘Boy, I really want a transfer quarterback.’ When Jeff came available, I said, ‘I want Jeff,'” said Rhule

It seems like Rhule has a QB competition on his hands in Lincoln.
