Matt Rhule created quite a stir recently in regard to the transfer portal. When asked if Nebraska would look for a quarterback in the portal, Rhule said the “going rate” is anywhere between $1-$2 million for a good QB.

Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, Rhule said some head coaches joked that they were unhappy with him for resetting the market. However, Rhule said it’s important people understand what’s going on.

“Some people were not happy with me, I had some other college coaches get on me and say Matt, you reset the market,” Rhule joked. “But I do think it’s important people know, right? What I’m afraid of… At the end of the day, there are no contracts. And Charlie Baker from the NCAA is trying to make it where the colleges (can do something). We can’t even have conversations with the players about the money.”

In this era, Rhule said players across the country are getting agents, but not all of those agents are certified. Add in the reality of 3rd parties at every program and there is a lack of regulation to the current system.

“So now you have all throughout college football you have players getting agents — sometimes they’re great agents, NFL agents, sometimes they’re not certified. There’s no NFLPA regulating it,” said Rhule. “They’re dealing with 3rd parties from each school. There’s no system to it.”

He went on to defend players getting money but railed against tampering issues. Overall, Rhule wants to see a system with regulation put in place.

“There is no system, and I think it’s important people know that. Some good coaches are losing their jobs, and some good programs are building players up and they’re leaving,” Rhule said. “I’m all for players making money, I just don’t think people should be walking into your program and offering players money. That would never happen in the NFL.”
